Fluoride Treatment in Levelland, tx

Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps prevent cavities and strengthen tooth enamel. It’s found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and even most community water supplies. While fluoride is essential for oral health, excessive intake can lead to fluorosis. Your pediatric dentist can monitor fluoride levels to ensure your child receives the right amount.

How does fluoride prevent tooth decay?

Fluoride protects teeth in two key ways:

Prevents enamel erosion by reducing mineral loss.
Promotes remineralization to repair early enamel damage.

Acid-producing bacteria in the mouth attack enamel after sugary foods are consumed. Fluoride helps shield teeth from these acid attacks, lowering the risk of cavities and childhood tooth decay.

How much fluoride is enough?

To prevent overconsumption:

Under age 2: Use non-fluoridated toothpaste.
Ages 2-5: Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and encourage spitting, not swallowing.

Too much fluoride before age four can cause fluorosis, which leads to white specks on permanent teeth. Children over eight are not at risk for fluorosis but should still use ADA-approved toothpaste.

Does my child need fluoride supplements?

Your pediatric dentist will assess your child’s fluoride intake, health history, and diet. If additional fluoride is needed, they may recommend:

At-home fluoride supplements for high-risk children.
Professional fluoride treatments (foam, gel, varnish) during dental visits.
