Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. These back teeth often have deep grooves, pits, and fissures where food particles and bacteria can get trapped, making them prone to decay. Sealants help by sealing these grooves and creating a smoother, easier-to-clean surface that prevents cavities.
Most decay in children and teens starts in these areas, which is why sealants are especially recommended for younger patients. However, adults and even some children with baby teeth may also benefit from sealants if their teeth have deep grooves or are prone to cavities.
