A Natural Way to Reduce Cavities

Xylitol in Levelland

Tooth decay is a common and preventable issue for children. If left untreated, cavities in both baby and permanent teeth can cause pain and affect their appearance and function.

Some children are more prone to cavities, even with regular dental visits and at-home care. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has recognized Xylitol as an effective way to reduce tooth decay in children.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a natural substance found in various fruits and vegetables, including berries, mushrooms, and corn. Research shows that consuming 4-20 grams of Xylitol per day, divided into several doses, can reduce tooth decay and cavities by up to 70%. To give context, a single cup of berries contains less than one gram of Xylitol.

For young children, it can be difficult to meet the daily requirement of Xylitol from fruits and vegetables alone. Fortunately, Xylitol is also available in sugar substitutes, gum, and other health foods. No other sugar substitute offers the same cavity-fighting benefits for young teeth.

How does xylitol work?

Xylitol reduces cavities by neutralizing the acids produced by harmful bacteria that feed on sugars and carbohydrates. These acids attack tooth enamel and cause decay. Xylitol helps protect teeth by neutralizing these acids and stimulating saliva production, which aids in washing away food particles and bacteria. When combined with fluoride, Xylitol helps remineralize teeth and prevent cavities from forming.

When should my child start using Xylitol?

Xylitol gum isn't recommended for very young children, but infants can benefit from their mother chewing Xylitol gum. Studies show that mothers who chewed Xylitol gum during the first two years of their child’s life reduced the child’s risk of tooth decay until age five. For toddlers and older children, Xylitol can be consumed as a sugar substitute or found in fruits and vegetables. Chewing Xylitol gum can also help prevent new cavities.
